Steering issues should not be taken lightly. Have a mechanic look at it ASAP. IF any of the suspension or steering components are original, my guess is on a 18 year old SUV, you have worn steering components, like tie rod ends and ball joints or the steering column rag joint.

Ball joints could have been rusted and when you drove it you could have broken the rust loose on mostly worn ball joints causing the issue. I'd take it to a reputable mechanic shop that deals with suspension and alignments.

Get front end up in air and sitting securely on stands sot tires are off ground. Shake each tire left and right as well as up and down. While doing so watch suspension and steering components behind tires. Focus attention towards tie rods and control arms.
