I am looking to buy a 2012 Q7 but it seems that the rear lift gate is manual ie remote key does not open it and neither does the button in the front door, is that a feature or something not working ?

Something is not working right. I have a 2012 Q7 & all remote features work. Check to make sure nothing is in the way of it opening/closing. I've had something small get caught back there & cause it not to work. Other than that, see your dealer for repair.
