Wrong Oil in SUV?

Asked by Oct 18, 2017 at 09:01 PM about the 2012 Hyundai Tucson

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So I went to an oil change place and they
accidentally put the wrong oil in my car. They put
5w-20 instead of 5w-30. Will this ruin my engine? I
have a 7 hour trip to make as well so will this make
my engine explode?

Seems a tad early to be putting in winter oil, if your location makes you change too it. if not have them put in the correct oil, 5W20 is just a little too light for normal temperatures. As far as any engine damage I doubt it would do anything unless you take a sustained freeway speed trip, then you could loose oil pressure due too low oil viscosity.

I would not worry. If you use oil top it off with the weight specified in the owners manual.

I am a certified tech and For one you never put two different weight oils in an engine. In other words you don't mix two different weights. But no it shouldn't hurt anything the first number is how well the oil protects in cold weather the second number is how well it protects in hot weather you want your first number to be fairly low and your second number to be fairly High but like the first guy said in the winter time as cool as it is out right now you shouldn't have any problem at al

I have been mixing grades of oils for decades and a million or more miles and have never had even the faintest hint of oil related failure on engines with 200,000+ miles on them.
