'No key detected' But they key is in the ignition

Asked by Leigh May 30, 2018 at 08:12 AM about the 2012 Ford Focus

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2012 Ford Focus. Key is in the ignition and they car will tell me no key
detected. It will also trigger my anti theft system when I unlock the door with the
key. And my alarm will go off when I go to start the car if it doesn't read my key
right away. I don't have a FOB. Just a manual key. I did just buy it used.

We found it was our cell phone - The phone was in a holder at the heater vent next to the steering wheel and it happened to us all the time - 'Key not Detected' - As soon as we moved the cell phone away it worked just fine Ü

This is currently happening to me. June 2019. Phone or no phone in the car. I do NOT have a push button start. 2018 Escape with 6400 miles on it, I've been towed 4 times now in the past year. They took out the aftermarket remote starter thinking it was that. Wrong. They cannot replicate the problem at the dealer. When it gets there, all is well. It is at the dealer now, having been towed. They will call and say, " All set, you can pick it up". they never say, it's fixed. They have already reprogrammed both keys. The first two times I think they did not believe me because they said 'that can't happen with a non-push start". The next time I took a picture. They said 'OHHHHHH we are glad you took a picture'. Still no fix. The dealer has been really nice about it. I just want it really fixed. I love the car but do not want to get stuck at night miles from home. I need to trust my vehicle.

Aug 2019 - Now experiencing the same on a 2015 Ford Fusion Hybrid (not a push start). Dealer also suggested it was remote start (which i've had for 2.5 years with no issue). I've replaced the battery in the key fob and the car, no change. Luckily have not needed a tow. It eventually starts, sometimes after 7-8 turns but the dash and radio flash like a strobe light. I checked the battery, still getting 12V. Alternator tested fine too. Local mechanic suggested the body control module? It's at the dealer now, will hopefully know more today.

This happened to me as well. My 2015 fiesta is a key to start (no fob push start button) Funny enough it started right after I got a wireless car charger that clicks on my AC/Heater vent. Since I removed from the vent it has not happen again. I tried searching for why my phone would do that but have not found an answer. I work for a cell provider and have that question into one of my engineers, I will post/update when I find out.

I am having this problem currently. I first took it to a lock company, they figured out that it wasn't a problem with the key but with the car. Now it has been in a mechanical shop for a month with no movement. Every time I ask for an update they have no answers and say they are 'having a conversation with my car'. The dealership said it would be months before they could get me in. I'm stuck without a car and dont know what to do.

I took out my fuse for the auto theft system, but when I put my key in the ignition it said that there was no key detected. When I put the fuse back in, the key was detected again. So maybe your auto theft fuse is blown.

I get the same "NO KEY DETECTED" on a non-push start 2015 Escape but only on one of the keys. Have replaced the key battery as well as swapped with the working one and same results. Everything else works fine, just won't start with the one key.
