Onboard computer mpg - how is it calculated?

Asked by Apr 19, 2014 at 09:04 PM about the 2012 Ford Focus

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I zero the onboard memory for mpg the readout is quite responsive to driving
conditions for many miles.  Eventually, though, it doesn't vary nearly as much as driving
conditions change.  Just interested, what is the formula or algorithm the computer uses to
calculate the mpg?

10,065

It is average based. The computer compairs the amount of fuel it injects to the run time since the last reset.
