can you run a strait pipe on a 1997 infinti i30 and just do away with the cadilac converter

Nope!! For 2 reasons. First it's a violation of State (all 50) and Federal Law to do so. Second the check engine light will be constantly on. This is because the downstream oxygen sensor monitors the catalytic converter's performance. So if the converter is gone a trouble code will constantly be set in the computer. HTH. -Jim
