I cannot move my outlanders steering from lock

My dad drove it yesterday and now I cannot move the ignition key from the lock position the wheel is stuck in position and the key and the spare will not move!, I've tried everything that the manual suggests - help!!!

Try pulling on your steering wheel to the left as hard as you can, while turning the key at the same time. Then try it to the right. Sometimes that will work.

Thanx so much for reminding me of this, less than a year ago this happened to me in a 94 4runner which I wrested with for half an hour before I figured it out. For some reason(maybe my age) I had forgotten all about this glitch. Anyway, it happened to me again and I thought for sure the battery was low or some sensor or something was buggered and never thought to play with the steering wheel. That did the trick, so thanx again for the reminder!
