I was getting bad fuel economy from my 2002 Trooper, and found the steel fuel tube from the fuel tank rotted letting out fuel on top of the fuel tank. Also your oxygen sensor could be bad. They determine how rich the fuel is to the engine. Too rich wastes gas and gives black smoke and won't run right.
