What causes my 1997 Ford Taurus to sounds like its in Neutral after stopping?

When I stop and then try to go it sounds like my car is in neutral (1997 Ford Taurus).  
What causes this to happen?

Low transmission fluid is one symptom. Check that first. Warm the car up at least 10-15min. Park on a level surface, engine running, in park, open the hood and check to see if it is in the crosshatched areas of the transmission dipstick located along the firewall, Should be a yellow handle.
