Why won't the gear shifter button push in and let me switch gears

The button on the gear shifter will not push in and
let me put the car in gear

Sounds like the brake/shifter interlock solenoid is not working. When you step on the brake pedal the solenoid is supposed to activate to unlock the shifter. Hope that helps! Jim
