Moisture in the oil. Check that the pcv valve is clean and working, and that the breather element is clean.

thank you for your help but there is no pcv valve it is a 2.2 My drive only four miles to work and we live in a cold climate the engine never gets fully heated up

Well then that is one reason why, and there has to be some sort of breathing system for an engine, or it would push oil out all over from pressure build up in the crank case. Short runs, engine not able to stay at operating temperature for very long creates condensation. It is just best to change the oil more frequently when going threw winter.

This 06 cobalt has condensation on the oil filler cap and a white residue on the dipstick. Still runs ok just wondering what would cause this? The coolant is still full and nothing is leaking!
