The rear differential between a 97 ExplorerXLT and a 2000 4WD rear end ? Interchangeable?

It's 2wheel drive with 4 wheel drive hook up and it's an XLT

You wouldn't know unless you took the new axle apart and counted teeth on the differential and compared that to your old one, or knew the VIN and looked up the gear ratio for both vehicles. If yours is also 4X4, the front and rear must match or you can't use the 4 wheel drive.
