Transmission 97' Ford explorer

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 97' ford explorer and my i have good
reason to believe my transmission is slipping.
I can't afford a new car so is it worth it to get
a repair kit or get a used transmission? Once I
hit 10 mph my RPMs start to go past 3, I have
to let up off the gas for my explorer to finally
shift. Gutting up to 30 mph my RPMs go up to
5. This is with fast or slow take off. I have
181.xxx miles if that makes a difference. So
again my question is, would be better to buy a
used transmission or get a repair? And also,
how much does the repair normally cost?

You can't repair an automatic transmission yourself unless you are an experienced automatic repair man in which case you would not ask this question. A used transmission is a big gamble. A decent quality rebuilt transmission (Ford Dealer) will run north of 3 grand.

As FOR stated, stay away from a used transmission. I have a '99 Explorer where the transmission went out maybe 5 years ago. Fortunately I have a tranny guy who has been servicing all my vehicles for 40 years. When asked about a repair or replacement, he stated there was no need for a replacement, just let him COMPLETELY rebuild what I have, not just repair up to the point of failure. Then bring back to him every two years and let him service it. Still working great with an additional 60K miles on it. Rebuilding what I had was about a grand less than having it replaced. Shop around for a good independent shop. Call around for a quote on a COMPLETE rebuild.
