98 Accord with spongy brakes

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 98 Accord brakes are spongy when the engine is running. When the car is not running the brakes firm up after stepping on the brake pedal once. When the engine is started the spongyness returns. Is this due to air in the lines? Thanks

This sounds like air in the lines. Your brake booster is fine -- as evidenced by the hardening of the pedal when the engine is off and you step on it. This is exactly what is supposed to happen if your vaccuum brake booster is functioning properly. I'd have the brakes bled, and have the calipers and wheel cylinders checked for leaks. I'd also have the brake fluid pressure checked to see if the master cylinder is functioning properly.
