Question type: Maintenance & Repair

1997 Ford Crown Vic, Standard - Not a interceptor - Start the car, drive down
the road, the system overheats and blows out the overflow, and almost
immediately cools down.  After it cools down the first time, it does not
overheat again until after it cools for a few hours,  New Thermostat is as far
as I got so far, All hoses appear in good shape. no leaks that I can see. only
coolant loss is from the overflow (That I can See). when you respond, please
email me. e050671 at yahoo dot com.

Maybe there is a head gasket issue? Maybe your getting combustion gases in the coolant? Sometimes I hook everything back up with the thermostat removed, engine and radiator full of coolant. Then the coolant flow, everywhere, is instant and you can check for coolant flow through the radiator. I realize some radiators don't have a radiator cap and some do. Even with the cap, if the neck is crooked, you can't see the coolant, but, you understand what I'm getting at as far as checking coolant flow. Just my opinion.

Did you bleed the air from the cooling system after replacing thermostat ?

check water pump, for flow check to see if main top water hose is hard going into top of radiator after driving a while, if not pump is bad or new thermostat not opening when hot or installed upside down.
