Remote start now working after battery indication light is solid while driving prior to shutting vehicle off

Asked by May 29, 2019 at 01:19 AM about the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My sister has a 2009 Cobalt.  The remote start works intermittently.   She says
that when driving the battery check light sometimes comes on.  It does not
flash, but is solid.  When it is on solid and she turns the vehicle off, the remote
will not work.  If the battery light does not come on when driving the remote will
work afterwards.  Any ideas?

It seems to me that there is an issue with the alternator or the battery. When the battery light comes on, it's indicating a charging problem; a defect in the alternator or a dying battery. It's then that the battery has enough juice to power the starter, but does not have the power to relay the remote signal to the starter. When the battery light is off, you have power for both. This can occur when you do short drives and repeated restarts deplete battery power. Then, after a longer drive, the battery is sufficiently recharged. Go to a car parts store and have these checked; probably free.

I have had some charging system issues with my cobalt and have videos covering both issues. This 1st video goes over connections to check before you condemn the alternator. This second video shows how to replace your alternator if it is in fact bad.
