Question type: Maintenance & Repair

HI
The catalytic converter warning light on or VW Polocross  came on at 65,000
kms. VW diagnosed a faulty timing chain tensioner and replaced it $2000, then
report we also need new HT leads and Plugs because one lead is shorting out.
could it be possible that eh shorting out lead caused a plug/cylinder to misfire
or miss, leading to unburnt fuel in the converter thus maybe the chain wasn't
the problem at all?

Very possible. When an engine misfires the unburned fuel is dumped into the catalytic converter. This overheats and damages the converter. The converter's life is greatly shortened by this. HTH. -Jim
