The 4wd won't work in my 98 ford ranger, what do I need to replace?

The most common problem is the transfer case shift motor, try lightly tapping on the motor while someone is pushing the four wheel drive button, if it shifts then the motor needs replaced, if it does not then you will have to check the actuator circuits to and from the shift module.
