My 98 explorer xlt won't engage any gears except 4low. And it makes a loud clucking sound when driving.

Check your rear driveline, if you put in back in 2wd and then in drive, in drive, raise the Rpms slightly above idle, then step on the brake and put back in park, does it make a ratcheting sound going back into park?

If it does and your rear driveline is still in the car, you may have a bad transfer case
