95 chevy k1500 / 350 eng chugs black smoke on takeoff, and smells rich at an idle

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have rebuilt the throttle body and replaced the map sensor, there are no codes stored in the computer and the check engine light isn't on.  we go to the lake often and when I back it down the boat ramp it wants to choke and chug real bad when we try to go , don't know why the incline would make a difference but it seems worse on the incline, any ideas?

It's definitely running too rich (too much fuel). I'd suspect the fuel pressure regulator first. Check the fuel pressure at the service port on the fuel rail. I'd also suspect that the purge valve for the EVAP system is stuck open and raw fuel is being pulled into the engine through the EVAP system vacuum line. Also check your air filter. If it's very dirty, that'll cause a rich condition as well. HTH. -Jim
