What will happen if I put a 50 fuse in a 40 fuse spot

You may burn up the part is blowing the 40 amp fuse.

The circuit is rated at 40 amps for a reason. The wiring can only handle 40 amps maximum. The device on the circuit should not draw anywhere near 40 amps of power unless there's a malfunction. Putting in a higher amp fuse can cause the wiring to overheat and possibly catch fire! Don't do it!! HTH. -Jim
