Hello everyone I just went out to crank my 2000 gmc yukon xl it doesn't turn over just makes a loud whining sound instead . What could it be?

Sounds like a problem with the starter drive not engaging. Should have the starter checked out.

You could try and tap on the starter to get it to engage with a hammer.

Just so you know the starter would still need repair or replacement.

ok just went back out to check and it started up with no tapping of the started but it drags in the startup

Sounds like you'll be replacing the starter. Just make sure the battery and connections are good.
