Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 89 towncar and when i shift into drive there is a hissing noise it also does that when i shift into 3rd gear. Is there an advice on where the noise comes from and how to fix it or anything i can do to stop it. Also does it affect my motor or  transmission performance in anyway.

The hissing you are hearing is the automatic parking brake release. With you being able to hear the vacuum, I would suggest that the diaphragm in the assembly is split, or the vacuum line has come off of the nipple.

The hissing noise could be the catalytic converters plugged and the exhaust is escaping through any leaks in the exhaust system. Loss of power combined with this noise is the tell-tale sign. For a cheaper fix and for those not having to worry about environmental concerns simply remove the flange closer to the converter and smash a piece of steel rod through the material inside the converter to make a hole for the gasses to go through or if it’s in the budget get a new catalytic converters, or a used one since the price of them is high. Of course further work to the exhaust system would be necessary too since bolts, flanges and gaskets may need repair/replacement since they likely destroyed by heat & rust and when you mess with them consider ahead to get it back together. I typically blow a hole or slice the the bolts and flanges to ease the pain of reusing the used parts & sometimes the flanges are so rotten I have to weld washers onto it to hold the new bolts. It can be tricky getting g everything to line up especially when laying under a car- hard to weld the top part of the pipes in this position but good luck and have fun. Some things are best left to the mechanic if you can find a reliable one or backyard mechanic who is fair and good, considering some people are on a budget otherwise you wouldn’t be on a website looking for answer.
