how often should the fuel filter be changed, or it not be changed at all?

I change my fuel filter every 4 services (20,000 km). I believe the frequency is dependent on environmental factors such as dirt levels and source of fuel. I travel a lot and mostly on dirt roads upcountry hence need to change regularly.
