The important thing is to stop it quick- before you blow your engine- start with coolant levels, look for leaks, check radiator for corrosion, maybe the thermostat? etc. etc. etc.

Remove your thermostat housing which is situated on the top right hand side of the engine by loosening the bolts and pipes, usually it will be the housing that is blocked or the thermostat that gave up and you will need to replace it. Also check your pipes to see if they are clear from dirt that may have caused a blockage. Could also be the waterpump. And lastly also the gasket.
