I ran out of diesel and the car won't start now. Will the pump prime itself or does it have to be primed? It is 1996, 2.2.

are you sure the pump did not burn out and fail? test...and listen for the whirr.

I'm a complete diesel novice but I have heard that diesel fuel systems have to be primed if they run out of fuel.

It's burnt...replace. Run dry...out of fuel....It's burnt.
