If you don't have a scan tool that's OBD I compatible you can use a paperclip. Make the paperclip into a horseshoe shape. With the ignition off insert the ends of the paperclip into the top righ hand two holes in the ALDL connector that's under the dash near the steering column (see picture). Turn on the ignition but don't try to start the engine!! The service engine soon or check engine light will begin flashing out reference code 12. It will be flash (pause) flash, flash. Code 12 tells you that you're in diagnostics mode and will flash out three times. There will be a long pause then any stored two digit touble codes will begin flashing out three times each. For example a code 43 will be flash, flash, flash, flash (pause) flash, flash, flash. This code will flash out three times. Then a long pause and the next code will begin flashing out. Once code 12 begins flashing out again, you're done. Shut off the ignition and remove the paperclip in that order. HTH. -Jim
