trans issues on 2000 Explorer / couldit be gaskets causing Reverse and Drive to not work? it goes in reverse when in Neutral and dives forward only in D1 or D2. any ideas?

2000 explorer goes  in reverse in neutral only and goes forward in D1 or D2 only not Drive. Any ideas? Gaskets?Selenoid? The OD light is not flashing.
Thanks for any advice.

Have the gear selector switch checked it could be damaged, loose or just plain bad.

I hope so. I do not need a costly repair right now. I am also going to have the thumbwheel gear switch checked. it seems that all the positions on the column are off by one space. Reverse is Park and Neutral is Reverse and Drive is D1 or D 2. I did notice that the indicator doesn't go fully in to the gear positions when shifting from Park to Drive etc..., off just a tad. I will have both checked out. Again, thank you for your help.
