Bought a 97 dodge van 2500 with a 318.

Has been sitting approx 1 yr with dead batt. will crank but only run on gas
dribbled in carb while cranking. Suggestions?

A 97 would not have a carburetor. Make sure the fuel pump is working but you may have to clean out the fuel system and replace the fuel filter.

I also have a 1997 Ram Van. I had the same problem and I went to YouTube. Press the gas pedal all the way down and keep it down while cranking the engine. When it starts you have to give it enough gas to keep it running until the ecu has relearned the idling position. I tried this and it worked for me. I hope it works for you too
