2001 Windstar-Running rough after the check fuel cap light came on. Cap is tight. Add additive to gas in case of water in gas. Still running rough.

Check Fuel Cap light came on. Cap was fine. Was on for a couple days. Then
started running rough. Idling at around 700 RPM and missing. Thought had
bad gas, so added fuel additive/injector cleaner to next tank of high octane
gas. Still running rough. Plugs looked fine.

Could be a dirty Idle Air Control valve or a dirty Mass Air Flow sensor. You can buy spray cleaner for each. Go to Youtube for instructional videos.

Since the check gas cap light came on I'd check or replace the gas cap and look for a disconnected or damaged vacuum line for the EVAP system. HTH. -Jim

Thank you so much. Husband is ready to haul it off for junk, but I just cannot do it if is a simple fix. Am rather attached to it.
