forester coolant pipe broken
Hit a deer a month ago and have been replacing a lot of things in the front of my 2009 2.5 sohc forester. I went to hook up the new radiator and the upper radiator hose and saw that the aluminum pipe coming from the engine was hit and has broken off up near where it comes out of the engine. What's the name of the pipe, can I replace it, can it be welded back together? Argggh.
Ok, the first pic is the pipe sitting on top of the radiator. Second is the top of engine right behind the p steering pump where it broke off.
That's the second pic...under the exhaust manifold. Here is the pipe. About 12" long.
On a side note; either lost in the crash or left off by a mechanic previously are the ac pump belt tensioner and some guard(s) mounted above the power belts. Apparently, there is a "crankshaft position sensor" under these guards/shields? I have been unable to find parts online to replace these. Any insight would be much appreciated!
naturally aspirated. no turbo. The (broken) pipe connects to the upper radiator hose. thanks
That pipe does not look stock. It almost looks like someone Mickie Moused an upper radiator support with a piece of pipe. How about a few more photos?
Ok, for the pic of the pipe, I just laid it on top of the radiator. Here is one of me holding the pipe close to its original position.
Now one of the broken pipe with the rad hose pushed onto it. I hope this is more clear. ?
And one more of the front end showing where it is. New support frame, radiator, timing belt covers, headlights, hood, air filter housing, power steering res., passenger side fender and rear view mirror. So we hit the deer at 65 mph and it pushed the frame, rad and fans back against the front of the engine and I guess that's when this pipe got smacked hard enough to break it off up there under the manifold.
Awesome! I think that's the part, and at $120 it's not nearly as expensive as I was afraid, but I gotta admit I am confused about my engine now. I'm sure it's a SOHC and from the little that I know that means it's not turbo. Of course I could be way wrong and kinda stupid about this. My owners manual says nothing about this other than a chart that shows DOHC as turbo and SOHC as non. Thanks Js, I'll do more research and hope I don't have to remove the top of the engine.
Using the vin, the engine is non turbo and yet when I look at the replacement parts offered on line, they ALL are for "2.5 Liter Turbo"....so I can't tell if it matters or not or if it is the same part for both types of engine. poop. I guess I'll have to call the supplier to find out. thanks again!
The same part is broken off in the same place on my 2009 forester and I’m having a rough time trying to figure out what it’s called. Did you figure it out the right name when you had this issue? Thanks
