Is it the tranny?

Asked by Mar 23, 2015 at 09:27 PM about the 2001 Ford Taurus

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just purchased a 2001 Taurus with just over 130000 miles. When we test drove it, it was
fine. I was out on the highway, today, and I heard a whistling sound and it felt like I was
loosing power. I pulled over and put it in park and sat there for a min. When I put it in
drive, it wouldn't move. Reverse either. I had to have it towed home. I bought it from an
individual not a dealer. Could it be something besides the tranny?

Sounds like a vacuum leak. Usually a whistling or hissing sound coming from the engine is going to be a vacuum leak. Any other symptoms? Rough or high idle? HTH. -Jim
