Sounds like a fuel pump problem, possibly the little internal check valve has gone bad. Run a fuel pressure test and flow. It most likely will fail the pressure hold part of the testing.

You should be getting battery voltage at the fuel pump when you first turn on the key then it will drop to 0 if the engine is not running. How much fuel pressure did it hold after the key was turned off? Go to: http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/150638-fuel-pressure- testing-on-1996-silverado-z71-4x4-57l-vortec/

I gust went out put the battery charger on the truck it started and ran fine e just don't get it
