82 350 spiiting
Recently bought an 82 k20 350 with "carberator"
problems. Rebuilt the carb, replaced the plugs, set
the timing. Cranks right over and idles like a champ
but runs like absolute junk. At a lose at this point,
do I buy a new carb? A distributor, all new wires?
I would first double check the ignition timing. Spitting or backfiring indicates that the timing is way off.
Make sure the right spark plug wires go to the correct plugs.

Did you do a complete tune up (spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and distributor rotor)? Remove the spark plugs and inspect the electrodes (tip that goes into the engine). What do they look like? Is your truck computer controlled? If you have a "choke" light it's not. HTH. -Jim
Not computer controlled, new electric choke, haven't done anything with distributor. Guess that will be next on the list
Ok, yes, I'd change the spark plug wires, distributor cap, and distributor rotor. Make sure the electric choke is operating correctly. They can be a bugger to get set right! The choke actually gets power from the oil pressure switch. This is done so the choke is only energized when the engine is actually running. Inspect those spark plug electrodes too. That'll tell us what's going on. If you have a rich or lean mixture. Or other problems like worn rings or valve guide seals. HTH. -Jim
Replaced the vacuum advance on the distributor. Wasn't allowing the timing to advance. Seems to have fixed the problem. Running like a beast now! Thanks!
