Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2006 Dodge Magnum and the electronic throttle position light (flashes the whole time) and the traction control light will come on at the same time.  When this happens it causes the car to rev loudly and shake some.  It will not allow me to go over 35 mph sometimes and 55 mph other times.  If I shut the car off and restart it, it clears it and works fine.  It seems to happen more often in the cold.  I cannot figure out what is wrong with it.

Go on a side street that you can steadily run ur vehicle at 30mph without stopping while pressing the traction button without letting go. ..do this for as close to 5 to 10 min....stop car..turn car off and take out key for 15 seconds....start car and this shud reset traction..hope this works

It's the TPS ( throttle position sensor) . I have two 06 Magnums, an R/t & an srt8. I don't know why they still use the drive by wire (no throttle cable) system. They fixed something that wasn't broken. Unfortunately the sensor is integrated into the throttle body and must be replaced as a unit. I bought a 85mm TB made by BBK (might as well get a larger one if you have to replace it) and haven't had any problems with it for the 4 yrs it has been in use. The good news is, the removal / replacement couldn't be easier. 20 min. P.S. when you are getting bad response from the throttle & the lightning bolt light comes on, simply shutting off the car and restarting will reset the TPS, and it will work for a bit,but doesn't correct the problem. Congratulations on your new throttle body :/

I had the red lightning bolt (Electronic Throttle Control warning) on my 2005 Doge Magnum RT 5.7 After changing plugs, Crank Pos sensor, Cam pos sensor, EGR valve and EGR tube O-rings, Throttle body, still ETC fault. The EGR tube O-ring is a common failure causing the ETC fault. Only after replacing the ECU did the problem go away. Sometimes the engine wiring harness needs to be replaced. Replacement ECU's have the latest firmware/software installed and is a lot more forgiving than older software.
