2001 Ford explorer misfire problems

Asked by Sep 24, 2019 at 01:47 PM about the 2001 Ford Explorer

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport 4.0 2 wheel drive
I change spark plugs plug wires last year so no
need to ask but I have a random misfire in
cylinders 1 2 and 3 according to the OBD reader I
changed coil pack no difference what should I try

1 Answer

The OBD reader indicates half the cylinders are dead on one side of the engine. Use an HEI spark detector (inexpensive) and check each spark wire end for fire. If the test indicates you are getting spark, then test the injectors using a noid light to ensure they are firing. You can also remove the injectors and check each one with ah ohm meter. If you are still good to go, get a compression gauge and check each cylinder on the affected side. You need air, spark, fuel, and compression for the cylinder to fire.
