Jeep at times will not shift into gear unless I bump it forward with the starter motor

1968 you could have enough wear on the cluster gears teeth as to cause a mismatch when they try to engage, it will get worse as you wear through the hardening on the teeth, you will eventually have to overhaul the trans.
