I was trying to jump off my jeep today and it would turn over but all of a sudden the starter would stay engaged and even when I turn the key off. I had to disconnect the jumper cable for it to stop.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The starter was turning the engine
over. Luckily my battery was dead or
the starter would keep spinning.
What's wrong with it?

I thought that may be it but the starter stays engaged even when the ignition is in the off position. That means something in the ignition system is telling the starter to start even when the key is off. I just don't know what. For instance when I connect the jumper cables to the battery, it engage the starter even if I don't have the key in the ignition
