How do I adjust my car for high altitude?

Asked by Aug 25, 2015 at 06:21 PM about the 1998 Honda Civic Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I moved to Wyoming from Missouri and my
car acts like it has no power. Maybe it didn't
adjust for the altitude?

They normally adjust automatically, but if you lived close to sea level and now your at 4000 feet you will notice a loss of power just because the air is thinner, you can replace the air filter, make it is tuned up properly and then reset the ECM and let it relearn it's surroundings and how you now drive at those elevations. That may help it a bit but you will still have reduced power from what you are use to. HTH

If you are @ 5000feet at ambient temperature and 30% relative humidity, you have lost 21% of your horsepower. Only a turbo compressor engine can compensate the loss.
