Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2002 Taurus just died. I was going down the highway when it suddenly stopped shifting. I coasted to a wide spot in the road and tried and tried to get it into gear. Nope!
But here is a cautionary note. A local transmission specialist had checked it for problems and told me that the car "would not leave me stranded!" Yeah, right.
The car had a problem almost since I bought it used a couple of years ago. Along the way, it would have a very brief hesitation while driving. This went on for two + years. My mechanic could not find out what was wrong. I replaced almost every electrical component - including the computer. I took it to different mechanics, and they replicated it, no luck. We ran every diagnostic, but still couldn't figure it out. It began doing the problem more often and was getting worse. Finally, after going through the car as much as possible the mech said to test the tranny.
I took it to a local shop specializing in Transmission. He test drove it and was able to replicate the problem.
Then he said was a problem with "some" Ford transmissions and I could safely ignore it. Chasing down the problem could cost $3,000 to $4,000 and still not fix it. That was 2 weeks ago.
Then last Thursday, Ka-blooie! Won't go into any gear and is not drivable.
Oh. And the mech said that the problem I brought it in for was a different problem that just broke the transmission.
So much for that.
What really torques me, is that I had asked him specifically if he could determine ANY other problems, and said no.
This was a $2100 car., so I'm not going to spend $1800 to $2,000 + to fix, but I'd like to know if anyone else has heard of this problem.
And now, I have to go car shopping and that doesn't make  me happy. And Oh, yeah - don't take your car there.
