Asked by William Nov 14, 2017 at 11:11 AM about the 1997 Cadillac DeVille

Question type: General

I have a 1997 Cadillac DeVille that will only go in
reverse. I've been told that it's abnormal for me to
have reverse and not first gear? I guess I'm just
wondering if my transmission is junk or is it
something possibly cheaper that I can have fixed?

Could have lost forward bands in tranny or a forward clutch pack... and it's not an easy one to drop as it's front wheel drive - you have to drop sub frame, brakes/suspension, engine/tranny come out bottom if it can't be serviced in place. Check on a Caddy forum for a good local tranny shop to take it to.

So any way it goes it isn't going to be cheap right? I appreciate your input. At this point I'm wondering if it's even worth putting anymore money into. I just had a new radiator and water pump put in a little over a month ago and had the front brakes and rotors replaced as well.
