1999 Cadillac deville overheating

Asked by GuruB56ZK Dec 12, 2018 at 12:10 PM about the 1999 Cadillac DeVille

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Car has had a new alternator, radiator and
thermostat replaced. The alternator was
replaced first. A week later the car started
having steam come from the hood. Was told
it was the radiator. Got a new radiator... two
days later, smoking again and overheating.
But saw fluid all over the battery and on the
bottom of the hood. Was told its still the
radiator and something rubbing on the
radiator.  And the coolant is running out fast.
Not sure if I have a bad mechanic or
something is just being missed. He said the
water pump was good .

Clearly you have a leak, and it's spraying on to the underside of the hood. Check all your hoses. You have an upper and lower radiator hose, bypass hose near thermostat housing, two heater hoses, and a hose to the overflow/degas bottle. A pressure test will find leaks pretty quick, if your mechanic doesn't have a cooling system pressure testing apparatus, time to find one that does. Fixing a leak however isn't guaranteed to fix your overheating problem though, you'll still need to check fan operation, thermostat, water pump, coolant flow to/from engine, and the possibility you have a blown head gasket.
