Starting system/Ignition switch

Asked by Jan 12, 2016 at 08:31 PM about the 2002 Ford Focus

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Recently bought a Ford Focus. The previous owner put a 100A fuse in the Ignition switch fuse spot. I did some research and found out it should only be a 30A fuse. I went and bought the correct one. I put it in and went to start the car and it instantly blew. I just need to know what damage the 100A could have done to make this happen and how to fix it. This is my first car and I know nothing about this stuff!

The previous owner put the higher amp fuse in there to "fix" an overload. This is very dangerous and can cause a fire!! You could be looking at some burned or damaged wires on that circuit. But you need to check out the components on that circuit and see which is causing the excessive draw or short. It's probably a bare wire touching something metal. HTH. -Jim

Could it be wiring in the door? I locked the with the button on the door and when I came back the fuse was popped and it would not start again

It could very well be. HTH. -Jim
