2002 Ford Explorer Won't go into gear

Asked by Dec 21, 2017 at 06:01 PM about the 2002 Ford Explorer

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2002 Ford Explorer with a V8 engine
will not go into gear. I can shift through the
gears and it will not catch and actually go
into gear. Been told it could be the fluid or
linkage  but wanted to get some opinions.
Thank you

yes fluid level and condition is always the first thing to check.you can try flushing it and adding new fluid and see what happens,if that doesn't help you will need fluid pressures checked, could be a internal problem.

Check fluid make sure theres enough. Have somone move the gearshift lever though the gears, while you look at the transmission to see if the internal parts are actually gettting shifted. The "shift tube" in the column is a common problem. Google and You tube can help.
