Why is the automatic transmission on my 1987 Mercury Grand Marquis not shifting properly any more?
Asked by froeschl May 19, 2015 at 02:27 PM about the 1987 Mercury Grand Marquis
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
since Wednesday last week the 4 speed automatic transmission on my '87 Mercury Grand Marquis does not shift properly any more. Lower gears at lower speeds (up to 40 mph) seem to work properly, However, when trying to accelerate up to 70 mph, the.engine is speeding up, but the transmission stops shifting. Max. car speed is limited to approx. 45 mph. What can be the cause and what can I do here ? Thanks for any support, Peter

First, check to see that the TV cable is properly attached to your throttle body blade. The bushing that it clips into rots, and cracks. Replace it and reattach. If that is good, you might be ready for a transmission rebuild.

The link cable and assembly seems to be OK. I can' t identify any defect. Will take the car to a transmission specialist. I fear that the entire AOD transmission will have to be removed and inspected. Any hints / experience how to access the bolts connecting the tranny with the engine ? At least the top bolts could become a challenge ! Thanks ...
