have a 79 Ranchero wheel size 14 in with the following tires on it 225/75R/14 wanting to upgrade to 15in rims with 235/70R/15 is this possible?

It is possible. It would be closer if you used 225/70/15 - that is if they make that size. Compare tire sizes at http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

tenspeed is right.... i have 15in 255/70s on mine, any wider and they will rub the fender

I’m running 235/60/15 front and 245/60/15 on the rear with no issues.
