ive tried to replace a battery on my opel corsa diesel by removing the old battery whilst the engine was running and after that the engine wont start, what can be the fault

WHAT? Safety first!!!! You always have the engine off when replacing a battery!! Sounds like you must have blow the main fuse. Hope it isn't anything worse.
