Does the neutral safety switch only allow the car to start in neutral, or should it also start in park on a 56 ford fairlane club sedan

Actually, it should only start in Neutral. If it is starting in park, someone has put a neutral safety switch out of a 1958 OR someone has bypassed the switch entirely which means it will start in gear. NOT a good thing.
