Why must i hold brights lever back at night
to have headlights

Holding the stalk back activates your high beams and used to flash to pass. Pushing the stalk forward locks the brights on until you turn them off. Sounds like your low beams are not working. Did you check the bulbs? Funny how both went out at the same time. Might be a wiring issue.
