Bring the number 1 cylinder to top dead center (TDC) as follows. Remove the number 1 cylinder spark plug and place your thumb over the hole. Crank the engine in quick bursts with the ignition until you feel pressure building under your thumb. Now look at the timing marks on the front of the engine. Continue cranking the engine and line up the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley with the zero mark on the gauge that's just behind the crankshaft pulley. Now, remove the distributor cap on the new distributor. Line up the rotor with the number 1 spark plug wire tower. Put the distributor in the engine. Note which way and how much the rotor moves as the gears mesh upon installation. Now pull the distributor out and reset the rotor to compensate for this movement. Now reinstall the distributor and loosely clamp it down. Reinstall the removed spark plug and put the spark plug wires on. While cranking the engine slowly move the distributor in both directions until the engine starts. Clamp down the distributor and use a timing light for the final ignition timing adjustment. Just loosen the nut holding it in, look carefully at the position of the rotor, pull it out and put the new one in exactly the same way- then put all the wires on exactly the same way- Jim has way more patience than me-

Lol, I was assuming that the distributor was out or that the engine had been disturbed since removing the distributor. HTH. -Jim

Why haven't you given Js08016 a "BEST ANSWER"? He deserves it
